Freelance writers looking to become expert ghostwriters for extra income should have writing samples handy for clients looking for their services.

Ghostwriting can be an extra source of income or a full-time job. Keep in mind, most clients need work done by a specific deadline making it important for writers to stay on task. Providing work in a timely manner will increase the chances for the writer to receive more work from the same clients.

What is Ghostwriting Anyway?

Ghostwriting is when a professional writer writes information, a book, an article, or any other type of writing allowing the credit to go to someone else. Often times a celebrity will have work ghostwritten for them. While some ghostwriters write the entire manuscript from notes or outlines, others are hired to tighten drafts. In any case, all the credit is given to someone else. Ghostwriters are paid with a flat fee, per page, royalties, or even a combination of all three.

Often, ghostwriters are hired to complete mostly finished works. Other times, fiction publishers will hire ghostwriters to write under a pen name of a famous author to promote the number of books by that certain author. Ghostwriting does not stop with books and manuscripts it is also common among screenplays, articles, music, blogging, and even in the academic world. Students needing to write term papers, entrance essays, etc. will hire ghostwriters to finish work for them.

Experienced Ghostwriter Writing Services

Ghostwriters are hired on a regular basis by many different individuals and businesses. If becoming a ghostwriter is something that sounds interesting give it a try. The old saying goes something like this, 'You never know unless you try.' Signing up as a freelance writer on contract work sites will enable clients to offer writers jobs. It is hard work to find a job ghostwriting, but with persistence it can be accomplished.

The first few jobs are the hardest to get. Don't sit back waiting on jobs to fall out of the sky. A ghostwriter must market his abilities allowing those seeking ghostwriters to find them. With a numerous amount of subjects to write about, picking an area of expertise would be greatly beneficial. The more writing jobs received the larger the area of expertise will grow. This will allow the range of expertise to broaden and more jobs to become available to the ghostwriter.

Checking freelance writing jobs online on a regular basis will keep the freelance writer first in the job line. Another way to gain access to jobs is to apply for a job with a writing service who offers clients the opportunity to choose a ghostwriter from their list of freelance writers.

Have Writing Samples Available for Clients and Agents

Writing samples will allow possible clients to see the ability of the ghostwriter before hiring. Not all clients will specify job details, but will give a brief overview with contact information. Don't be shy, contact all jobs that sound interesting and ask for more information if needed. By applying for many jobs at once the opportunity for work will increase and with writing samples available the client can judge if it is the style of writing needed for the project.

A lot of ghostwriters have agents to help in the job search. An agent will find work for the ghostwriter mainly because if the writer is making money the agent will be also. Have a portfolio of writing samples available for the agent. Be careful, some agents can do more harm than good. Research an agent's credibility before signing on with him/her.

There are many pros and cons to ghostwriting. Many writers believe the writer should be credited with his own work while other writers are fine making a living without any recognition at all.

This article clearly describes what's required of hopeful ghostwriters. However, as an aspiring author with a mystery/romance manuscript still in progress and no published writing samples, what opportunities exist for an aspiring soul as myself in the ghostwriting business? Should I bypass until I'm either published by a traditional house or self-published? Please advise. Thank you. Beatrice B.

Annette Phillips :
Whether you have been published or not, if you have the writing skills to ghostwrite by all means persue your dream. Write a few samples to show your work they need not be published. The sample only serves to show your writing abilities. Don't give up and remember persistance is the key. The decision to self-publish is a choice each author has to make on his/her own. Good Luck!
